Cruising To Cozumel
Cruise ships visiting Cozumel stop over at one of three deepwater dock sites, including the International Pier, Puerto Maya, and Punta Lagosta. Your ship may also anchor offshore with departures to the Cozumel docks via smaller vessels.
The International Pier was the first dock constructed for cruise ship traffic. This docking site is often utilized by Norwegian Cruise Lines. Although this dock is one and a half miles away from San Miguel's downtown, cruise ship passengers can enjoy a pleasant seaside stroll along the coastal promenade lined with boutiques and cafes where you can shop for locally-made crafts and other souvenirs, or enjoy a refreshing tropical cocktail or tasty meal. Taxis are also readily available at both taxi stands or along the road to downtown. These taxis can also transport you to beaches, beach clubs, or nature reserves on the island. Be sure to establish the rate for your cab ride with the driver before entering the taxi. Drivers are legally required to show every passenger a government-sanctioned rate card.
Puerto Maya, located approximately a half mile south of the International Pier, is the departure point for Carnival Cruise Line passengers. There is a commercial area of shops and restaurants near these docks, but if you are looking for a more authentic local experience and avoid an artificial environment, you should head to San Miguel via taxi cab. Cruise ship visitors to Cozumel can also travel around the island by renting a car or motor scooter.
Punta Langosta, unlike the other cruise departure points, is located in downtown San Miguel. Once in town, don't be afraid to wander away from the seaside buskers and shopping venues. You will discover better deals with a little exploration. Generally, seaside vendors are pricier. The recommended vendor lists offered by cruise lines are often funded by kickbacks. Playa Azul and Chankannab National Park are only a brief taxi ride away from the docks downtown. There are ample spots to rent a vehicle in the downtown area as well.
