This charming isle was named because it was once a sacred ceremonial destination for worshippers of the goddess of fertility and the moon, Ixchel. Mayan women would venture to the island on annual pilgrimages to pay tribute to Ixchel. You can still discover the ruins dedicated to Ixchel on the southernmost tip of the island at Punta Sur. Punta Sur offers sightseers a remarkable view from sixty-five-foot cliffs across the bay to Cancun. The Ixchel Temple was built on this spot because it is the highest elevation on the island (as well as the Yucatan).
