The deep-water channels between Cozumel Island and Riviera Maya draw a legion of hungry pelagic species migrating northward from equatorial waters every spring and summer. Dorado, also known as dolphin fish or mahi mahi, first appear in the region in February. There's no better cure for the winter blues than hooking a forty pound dorado while trolling in the Caribbean Sea beneath the tropical sunshine. The vibrantly-colored fish are well-known for putting up an excellent battle after being hooked.

Billfish (like white marlin, sailfish, and blue marlin) also seasonally inhabit the waters off the Yucatan. Although anglers are required to catch and release these billfish species, the exhilaration of hooking and reeling in a trophy billfish will be the highlight of your vacation.

Anglers will also have a chance to troll for varieties of tuna species like blue fin and big-eye. These tuna don't peak in a frenzy like other species, but offer some good fishing throughout the year.

If you are interested in doing some light tackle fishing or bottom fishing, species like barracuda, sharks, grouper and snapper inhabit the local waters throughout the year.
