The warm, crystal-clear waters of this area provide an idyllic environment for over 500 different fish species. You may see variations of blue tangs like doctor fish and surgeon fish. You could spot butterfly fish like four eye butterflies, spot fin butterflies, banded butterflies and reef butterflies. Blue angelfish, queen angelfish, rock beauties, French angelfish and gray angelfish also inhabit the reefs of the western Caribbean. Squirrel fish like long spines and black bars are also found off the Mayan Riviera.
Stoplight parrotfish, queen parrotfish, princess parrotfish, and rainbow parrotfish provide a brilliant spectrum of colors for divers to see. You will discover a varied assortment of corals in this region as well, including brain coral, black coral, white coral, fire coral, flower coral, star coral, leaf coral, pillar coral, sea fans, gorgonians, elk horn coral, sea rods, stag horn coral, sea whips and club finger coral. Inhabiting the coral gardens of this area, you will discover crustaceans, mollusks, anemones, octopi, and more. Two different types of sea turtles inhabit this region, and you may see them near the reefs.
